Assignment Spotlight: Getting to Know You Bingo

In today's blog post, I will highlight an assignment that I have done for several years now and is always a hit. Strictly speaking, this assignment can be viewed as an ice-breaker activity, but can be altered to be a course assignment as well. This one is called Getting To Know You BINGO.
The Getting to Know You BINGO activity is an activity that can be used to extend an introduction activity. The details of this assignment were published in The Teaching Professor (Nurse-Clarke, 2021). In short, students introduce themselves in a manner of the instructor's choosing, then complete an instructor-made BINGO card based on the information they gain from the introduction. The card can include prompts such as, someone who speaks another language, or someone who's favorite color is blue.
These types of activities are great for helping create a sense of community in the classroom. They also give students an opportunity to learn more about each other, which is especially important in online classrooms. After all, building relationships is key to student success!

Some variations of this assignment can be a concept-based BINGO where students fill in terms related to a course concept being taught, or an end-of-Module BINGO activity.
Overall, Getting To Know You BINGO is a great way to get your students engaged and interacting with each other in the classroom, regardless of whether it's online or face-to-face.
