Assignment Spotlight: How a Bill Becomes Law: A Health Policy Debate with a Twist
Jul 04, 2023In today's blog post, I'll share an assignment that I have been doing in my health policy course that is a debate activity with a twist and share how you can develop a similar activity.
In a recent article published in the Journal of Nursing Education, I shared an assignment that I do in my health policy course that focuses on a debate activity. You can access this teaching strategy online here. In a nutshell, students pick a topic to debate and the class votes on which side did the better job. The twist on this assignment is that I also take the class through an experiential learning activity of how a bill becomes a law. In this, students vote as different chambers of congress and get to actualize how difficult it is to pass las. Learn more details on this assignment here.
The best thing about this activity is the experiential learning aspect. Taking students through a debate or a quality improvement activity or a policy makes the learning more tangible. Interacting with the content helps students retain and understand it better, as compared to a lecture or reading alone.
By providing experiential learning opportunities, we can help ensure that our students are well equipped to enter their profession as competent, caring professionals.
