Ed Tech Tuesday: Socrative
Oct 26, 2021Socrative is an engaging, interactive Ed Tech Tool that can be used to take quizzes and surveys in the classroom. While I've never used it in my own online courses, there are some features that I think can really enhance an online course. In today's blog post, I'll share some of those details.
What is Socrative?
Socrative is a formative assessment tool that helps teachers to monitor student understanding instantly while communicating and building community. This real-time feedback allows students to receive immediate learning guidance, thus creating a highly interactive learning environment. By engaging both the teacher and student in this way, Socrative plays an essential role in 21st century learning.
How you can use Socrative in the online classroom:
Socrative is a powerful, flexible tool that offers many ways to connect with students and provide immediate feedback. Its essential features include:
Get real-time data on student understanding to make better teaching decisions. Encourage students to participate actively in your online course by providing interactive learning guidance based on responses from the Socrative quiz. Provide students with feedback on how to improve their performance.
In the area of higher education , it is especially important to engage students who are studying online. One effective way of doing this is by making the classroom game-based. Use Socrative leaderboards and “followers” trackers (which can be attached to Twitter) to create a competitive environment where students are naturally motivated to participate more often in order to improve their standings.
Socrative has several built-in images that can be used to create a virtual classroom, including a picture of yourself! These images allow you to make the online classroom feel more personal for your students.
Both online instructors and students need to feel involved and capable of communicating. For synchronous online courses, Socrative provides the perfect way for this communication between teacher and student, through its built-in chat feature. This chat can be used before or after class, or during a quiz/test.
By encouraging communication outside of the classroom, you are building community among your online learners, which will get them excited about your online course.
Socrative offers many more features, including grouping quizzes, creating customizable questions, tracking student progress, and collaboration between teachers/students in real time.
I'd love to hear your ideas on how you might be able to use this tool in your own online course. Share them in The Online Educator Facebook Group!
