Assignment Spotlight: Human Scavenger Hunt
Jan 05, 2021A few weeks ago I stumbled upon an awesome activity called the Human Scavenger Hunt. It is an Icebreaker activity that follows the Bingo format and serves as a great way for students to get to know fun facts about each other. This is an excellent icebreaker activity to do and to enhance a sense of community. In today's blog post we will take a look at this practice and consider some ways it can be adapted to the online environment.
Human Scavenger Hunt
The Human Scavenger Hunt activity essentially asks students to find colleagues that have certain characteristics that are pre-selected on a google doc which the instructor created. The document is in the form of a fill-able BINGO style card that students, who are broken up into groups, try to fill-in as much as they can.
This activity is described as an adaption to a live synchronous online course. However, I think it can be easily adapted to the asynchronous online classroom. For instance, one idea is to do this activity in the discussion board or VoiceThread and have students fill out the BINGO cards independently rather than in groups. Alternatively, the class can be instructed to create the BINGO cards themselves and fill in the card that another student created based on class introductions.
Since building a sense of community in an online class is of utmost importance, activities like this are essential to online courses.
