Ice-Breaker Tuesday: What's Your Mood?
Jan 10, 2023I came across these fun, versatile "What's Your Mood" ice-breakers in the K-12 arena and thought they would be a fun ice-breaker activity to share. Learn all about them in today's blog post.
Ice-breakers are great in online courses because they help you get to know your students, provide an opportunity to help your students get to know each other, and help to create an environment of trust and mutual respect. This activity is structured around the idea that everyone's moods are different, but they can still be leveraged to foster connections among students.
To start off this activity, ask each student to describe their current mood in one word. Encourage them to be creative, and to think beyond the traditional happy or sad. Once everyone has shared their word, ask them to explain why they chose it. You can then use these responses to create fun conversations among the students or organize activities around a specific mood.
For example, if you had two students who said "adventurous" and "creative," you might suggest an art project or a nature walk to explore their adventurous sides. Or if multiple students chose "energized" and "motivated," you could organize a group project around that energy. You might also use these "moods" to help spark ideas for future class assignments.
This activity is great for strengthening relationships between students, exploring different perspectives and emotions, and sparking creativity. Plus, it's a fun way to help students feel seen, heard and valued, which is a huge part of building inclusivity.
Here is a link to a TON of "How are you feeling Meme" slides a K-12 educator named Sara Miller-Loveridge shared. They should spark lots of ideas for your own slides!
