Managing Your Expectations During the Transition to Online Instruction

If you're brand new to teaching online, it is important to try to manage your expectations during this period of transition to online instruction. I know that there is an overwhelming amount of resources floating around and it may be difficult to understand what you are expected to do.
I recently read a great blog post that gave some perspective on the move to online instruction by Robert Talbert. He discussed some guiding principles that people should keep in mind which you can read about here.
In short, he said: Keep it simple, be socially present and communicate a lot, establish and follow routines, trust your students and give grace more than usual, and banish all perfectionism.
I would love to echo these sentiments. No one expects you to be perfect online educators with perfect online classes. Remember to add small gestures of humanism in your course and regularly communicate with students. These strategies can go a long way! Most of all, be patient and forgiving toward yourself. We are all in unfamiliar waters and it may take a longer period of adjustment that you may like, but it will happen. Ask for help when needed, engage in self-care, be socially distant, but not isolated.
