Radical Online Resource: The Value of Play in HE: A Study. Free Book!

Aug 30, 2022

In today's blog post, I'll be discussing a wonderful free resource called The Value of Play in Higher Education: A Study. This is a Free eBook written by Alison James PhD. In today's blog post I'll discuss the main parts of the book and share some reasons why you might want to incorporate play into your academic teaching.

The Value of Play in Higher Education: A Study is a research-based book that explores the many benefits of incorporating play into the college experience. The book includes data from participants from 70 different academic subject areas and over 300 different examples of play! Data was gathered from over 120 participants from 20 different countries which makes this one of the most complete looks at the benefits of play in higher education and also makes it possible to explore the cultural difference and play, what gets in the way of play, what helps it thrive, and where playful Higher Education can go to next.

One of the things I love about the book is the Gallery which shares different playful activities from around the world that have been created by educators. The activities are categorized by topic so you can easily find ones that would be most relevant to your students or teaching style.

Some reasons why you may want to incorporate play into your academic teaching are:

  • Play can help students learn content more deeply.
  • When students are engaged in play they are more likely to take risks and explore new ideas.
  • Play can help reduce stress and anxiety and create a more positive learning environment.
  • Play can help build community and foster collaboration among students.

Not only is play beneficial for students, but it can also be beneficial for educators! Play can help educators feel more creative, connected to their students, and less stressed.

If you're interested in incorporating play into your higher education teaching, I highly recommend checking out The Value of Play in Higher Education: A Study. It's a great resource that is full of information, inspiration, and practical examples.
